Today we’re excited to announce we’ve released a new version of the Mac app that is more performant, will use less storage on your computer and will allow you to build and store larger asset libraries in Lingo. To use this new version you’ll need to update your Mac app.

The main problem we set out to address with this update was Lingo taking up too much storage on customer’s computers. This problem existed because in the old version of the Mac app, when a user would open a Kit the app would download ALL the assets contained inside the kit. Once an asset was downloaded there was no way to remove it from your computer other than deleting it in Lingo. This setup not only lead to lots of storage consumption but also caused slow image loading.

We’re happy to say we’ve solved this problem in the new version of the Mac app. You can now quickly browse through and use your asset library without Lingo taking up lots of storage on your computer. This is possible because Lingo will only download the assets when you need to use them. Most of the time your assets will be downloaded automatically when you use them, however in some instances you may need to manually download them before using. This can be done by selecting the cloud icon in the upper right corner of the asset.

Here’s an example of how much this new update enhances the performance of the Mac app. In our tests adding assets is 25x faster, opening a newly synced kit takes 98% less space on your hard drive and the time for an image to display in the gallery was 20x faster.

With this update in place we’ve laid the foundation that will make it possible for customers to manage much larger asset libraries in Lingo. We have several other updates and enhancements planned in the near future that will work toward this goal as well.

We hope you find this new update useful and as always we’d love to hear what you think, so leave a comment below, shoot us an email or tweet at us.
